Mayor Jim Marshall

1. Briefly describe the structure of your program.

This initiative was founded by Emilie Edwards, a student at Mercer University in Macon. Initially, Emilie obtained permission from one of the local elementary schools to come into the school on a weekly basis to teach conflict resolution methods to the children. After one term of working alone she was able to get others to volunteer to help her. She and her volunteers are working in two schools at the present time. She organized a summer camp for many of the children who participated in the program during the school year.

2. When was the program created and why?

It was founded by Emilie Edwards in response to questioning what one person could do to address youth violence in Macon. It was founded in 1996.

3. How do you measure the programís effectiveness?

It is measured by monitoring the behavior of the participants within their individual classes.

4. How is the program financed?

Donations from Mercer University, St. Francis Episcopal Church and Mercer University students finance the program.
