Mayor R.J. "Hank" Thompson

1. Briefly describe the structure of your program.

The City has implemented several programs that are proving to be beneficial in preventing and responding to violence in the schools.

One common theme that runs through all the programs is increased contact between community and the police; build confidence and the comfort level and prevention of a problem before it develops.

This program is a 17-week curriculum on self-esteem, confidence, violence, the consequences of the actions you take, making the right decisions and how your decisions affect the rest of your life. The program is taught by a certified D.A.R.E. Officer to all the 5th grade elementary students in the city.

2. When was the program created and why?

The program began in 1986-87 to provide drug education and prevent the use of drugs by young people.

3. How is the program financed?

The program is funded by drug seizure funds.
