Removal of Architectural Barriers Program

With the goal of making their homes more accessible, Carolina's Removal of Architectural Barriers Program provides technical and financial assistance to low- and moderate-income families which include a person with a disability. Each participant can receive up to $3,000 to make the needed improvements.

Technical assistance on eligible improvements, costs, specifications and/or suggested priorities is provided through the inspection process. There are three inspections: one at the beginning, as part of the evaluation process; another while the improvements are being made; and the last when the work is completed. The participants can choose an authorized contractor from a list provided to them by the Program.

A total of 85 families have benefitted from the Program so far. Forty-five percent of the beneficiaries are elderly, and 58 percent had incomes between $5,000 and $10,000. The Program now is focusing on removing barriers in pubic buildings and facilities.

Due to the success of the Removal of Architectural Barriers Program and the many inquiries it has generated, it was recently expanded to provide funds to enable low- and moderate-income families without a disabled member to make needed improvements to their homes. These families can receive up to $6,000 for improvements. The Program hopes to serve 60 families in its first full year.
