Over the decades, USCM has responded to the health and human services needs of cities with a wide variety of programs and activities, including:
- organizing Mayors and health officers in support of major health initiatives
- organizing the city human services officials in support of major human services initiatives
- providing grants to local health departments and community-based organizations
- conducting major national studies on public health and human services issues
- convening gatherings of experts on urban health and human services issues
- producing regular technical assistance and health policy publications
The USCM Approach
The close working relationship that USCM staff have with Mayors allows for the synergistic development of major health and human services initiatives at the local and national level. Staff responds to Mayors' public health priorities by exploring ways that Mayors as a group can effectively address those priorities. Staff members inform Mayors of developments in public health and human services that affect urban populations. Backed by the authority of Mayors, staff is able to bring national attention to major health initiatives.
