Mayors' Campaign for Healthy Cities

Launch the Guide

The United States Conference of Mayors developed this online “Mayors’ Guide to Fighting Childhood Obesity,” to educate mayors about specific policies they can adopt in their communities to address childhood obesity in underserved populations. This guide has now been updated for 2009. The Guide offers action steps mayors can take to address childhood obesity and promote healthy eating/active living in their communities and provides local examples of such policies. It also contains a large resource section with information on funding opportunities, online resources, and other pertinent items of interest to mayors and their staff.

Users able to have access to up-to-date content print individual pages or sections of the Guide from their computers, and click on live internet links that will take them directly to policies, programs, and resources cited in the Guide.

Leadership for Healthy Communities

Leadership for Healthy Communities (formerly known as Active Living Leadership) is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The program supports state and local policy leaders in efforts to create healthier communities by promoting policies and programs that will improve access to affordable healthy foods, increase opportunities for safe physical activity, and improve the social environments that shape how children perceive and relate to healthy eating and active living.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,139 such cities in the country today. Each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor. The primary role of the Conference of Mayors is to promote the development of effective national urban/suburban policy; strengthen federal-city relationships; ensure that federal policy meets urban needs; provide mayors with leadership and management tools; and creates a forum in which mayors can share ideas and information.

This Mayor’s Guide is made possible through partial funding by Leadership for Healthy Communities--a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. To submit a question or comment, please contact lbrown@usmayors.org.
