Mayors Convene To Develop Strategies For Addressing Key Water Issues
The 1997 Urban Water Summit, sponsored by The United States Conference of Mayors Urban Water Council and the City of New Orleans, will give mayors and their water directors a forum for determining national priority issues. Participants in the summit will also develop strategies for cities to work collaboratively with regional, state and federal agencies and the private sector toward a number of goals, including:
- Sustainable watershed use
- Implementation of the Safe Drinking Water Act
- Reauthorization of the Clean Water Act
The Summit is open to the press.

Highlights of the Summit include:
- A discussion of the just-released Mayors' Action Plan on Sustainable Watershed Management. Participating in the discussion will be John Bullard (NOAA), Mayor Carleton Finkbeiner (Toledo), Mayor Patrick McCrory (Charlotte), Robert Perciasepe (US EPA), and Max Schnepf (USDA).
- Mayors and federal officials will be available to the press Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the
Patio Evangelin Suite, First Floor.
- John Barry, Author of Rising Tide, will be the featured guest at Mayor Morial's Environmental Breakfast Forum on Friday.
- Tours of New Orleans' Famous Historical Stormwater Pumps will also be available.
