Mayors Meet on New Federal Transportation Law
NEW ORLEANS (October 27, 1998) -- The Federal Government will make over $218 billion transportation dollars available to state governments over six years through the provisions of TEA-21, a new federal transportation law. Mayors and county officials are interested in bringing these monies to their local economies to improve roads, bridges and highways in their communities. Today they convene in New Orleans to share ideas on how to take advantage of this federal assistance.
The United States Conference of Mayors joins the National Association of Counties to sponsor the "Fair Share Summit: Getting Access to TEA-21 Resources for Local Transportation Investments." The purpose of the Summit is to advise local officials on how to attract federal dollars to local areas to improve transportation networks. Hosted by Mayor Marc Morial, the "Fair Share Summit" includes over 20 mayors and several county officials who will share their ideas and information relating to the transportation issues. Designed to facilitate information-sharing among the mayors and county officials, the Summit hopes to help the mayors work with their state legislature and to pursue other initiatives to increase the commitment of federal transportation dollars to local transportation priorities.
