(4/29/98) Six Pack Selected At U.S.A. City Water Taste Test

Mayors Will Select National Winner From Diverse Group At USCM Annual Meeting in Reno

In a blind taste test, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Urban Water Council, the cities of Anchorage (AK), Dothan (AL), Mountain View (CA), Oklahoma City (OK), Syracuse (NY) and Westminster (CA) were selected as finalists in the U.S.A. City Water Taste Test. Over 100 cities entered the national competition, which was held in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, April 29.

The six finalists were announced by Conference of Mayors Executive Director J. Thomas Cochran, who said, "The fact that over 100 Conference of Mayors member cities are participating in this taste test shows that cities are indeed proud of the water that they produce and distribute every day." The city with best tasting tap water in the nation will be selected from the six finalists by all the mayors participating in the 66th Annual Meeting of the U. S. Conference of Mayors, being held in Reno, NV on June 19 - 23, 1998.

Celebrity judges, chosen for their water expertise included: Kimberly Messersmith, Director of State Government Affairs, American Express; Tommy Jacomo, Restaurateur, The Palm; Donna Moore, Women's Winner, 1997 U.S. Marine Corps Marathon; and Dave Pittenger, Executive Director, National Aquarium in Baltimore.

One purpose of this event is to draw attention to the quality of municipal tap water across the country. Many cities, in fact, bottle their tap water as a promotional item. Mayors and water managers are confident that their municipal tap water is every bit as tasty as "bottled waters."

The Urban Water Council, begun in 1995, functions as a "task force" of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The Council provides mayors a forum for addressing water and wastewater issues, such as the operation, maintenance, development and financing of water and wastewater infrastructure and the importance of watershed management to achieving national and local water quality goals.
