PROMOTING PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES IN CITIES AS A MEANS TO
IMPROVING HEALTH AND LIMITING OBESITY AMONGST CITY RESIDENTS
THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES
WHEREAS, regular physical activity is known to be essential
for optimal health and well-being and daily physical
activity, even at moderate intensity, reduces the risk of
major health problems; and
WHEREAS, regular physical activity and participation in
individual sports and sports programs can greatly and
significantly enrich personal enjoyment and satisfaction
and enhance quality of life; and
WHEREAS, many Americans, their families, cities,
communities, businesses, both large and small, as well as
national, state, and local governments and government
agencies are increasingly concerned about levels of
physical fitness and the harmful consequences of physical
inactivity; and
WHEREAS, along with major medical advances, there is
growing recognition that regular physical activity is an
important, even essential, part of daily life for all
Americans regardless of age, race, gender, or physical
ability; and
WHEREAS, the Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity
and Health has issued a call to action by highlighting the
numerous health benefits of regular, moderate physical
activity. The healthier we are as individuals, the
healthier we are as cities, communities, states and as a
nation; and
WHEREAS, to achieve the goals of improved individual, city,
state, and national health, we must accept the
responsibility of helping and encouraging those around us
to become more physically active; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that The United States
Conference of Mayors, in further support of local and
national efforts to counter growing obesity rates and the
myriad problems associated with being overweight, in
children, youth and adult residents, does urge individuals,
voluntary, community and faith-based organizations;
professional societies, private and public corporations and others to work with government at all levels to promote
regular physical activity, fitness and sports activities in
which all our citizens can participate; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that The U.S. Conference of Mayors
urges individuals and families in cities to begin and/or
renew their commitment to make regular physical activity an
integral part of their lives; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that The U.S. Conference of Mayors,
as the official nonpartisan and premier organization of
cities in the United States, continues its leadership role
in advancing and enhancing the availability and opportunity
for physical activity, fitness activities inclusive of
individual participation in sports and sporting activities
within our cities.
