SUPPORT FOR COOPERATION BETWEEN THE U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS
AND METROPOLIS
WHEREAS, The United States Conference of Mayors has worked
with the World Association of the Major Metropolises, known as
Metropolis, headed by Barcelona Mayor Joan Clos, over the past
five years; and
WHEREAS, Metropolis supported the Second International Summit
of the Conference of Mayors at it Annual Meeting in Denver in
June 2003, with the presence and address to the mayors of
Mayor Clos, Secretary General Roig, and others; and
WHEREAS, Conference President Donald L. Plusquellic delivered
an address to the Opening Session of the Eighth World Congress
of Metropolis in Berlin on May 12, 2005, and Conference Vice
President Long Beach Mayor Beverly O’Neill participated in the
Metropolis Commission on Urban Mobility in Istanbul in 2003;
and
WHEREAS, on May 14, 2005, at the Eighth World Congress of
Metropolis in Berlin, President Plusquellic and Executive
Director Tom Cochran signed a Memorandum of Understanding
between Metropolis and the Conference, co-signed by Metropolis
President Barcelona Joan Clos and Secretary General Josep
Roig, and
WHEREAS, this Memorandum of Understanding establishes a
framework of cooperation and partnership in which both
organizations
Agree to send a mayoral representative to the other’s
statutory meetings at no cost to the organization;
Recognize that the exchange of best practices in urban
management, mayor-to-mayor, is central to urban
development and innovation;
Agree to work to enhance their programs within their
existing meeting structure and agendas; Understand that
the Memorandum of Understanding does not engage the
parties to any financial obligation; and
Commit to a three-year period of cooperation, which can
be extended if mutually acceptable to both organizations,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that The U.S. Conference of
Mayors expresses its commitment to this new partnership and looks forward to working with Metropolis to realize a better
quality of life for mayors and their citizens in national,
regional, and international forums.
