76th Annual Meeting
June 20-24, 2008



WHEREAS, 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the modern State of Israel; and

WHEREAS, beginning in 1980, mayors from the United States and their colleagues from around the world have gathered in Jerusalem for the annual Jerusalem Conference of Mayors to exchange views and experiences relating to significant urban problems and learn first-hand from the Mayor of Jerusalem about what that historic and diverse City has accomplished and the challenges it has faced; and

WHEREAS, the Jerusalem Conference of Mayors has also offered mayors an opportunity to witness the growth and development, progress and accomplishments of the State of Israel, a young and vibrant democracy; and

WHEREAS, as a result of the Jerusalem Conference of Mayors, 225

U.S. mayors have developed a much greater appreciation of the challenges Israel faces in its continuing efforts to ensure security within the nation and achieve peace within the region;and

WHEREAS, The United States Conference of Mayors greatly appreciates the generous support of the Council for World Jewry and American Jewish Congress, the Mayor of Jerusalem and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel which have made this annual event possible,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that The United States Conference of Mayors salutes the State of Israel and the Israeli people for 60 years of remarkable achievements; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that The United States Conference of Mayors urges continuation of the peace process until peace, security and prosperity can be realized both within Israel and between Israel and its neighbors.
