Mayors Collaborating with Local Hip Hop Artists

Adopted at the 87th Annual Meeting in 2019

  • WHEREAS, Hip Hop has produced some of America's leading creative artists and ranks as one of America's greatest exports to the world; and

    WHEREAS, Hip Hop has inspired dancers, choreographers, poets, novelists, filmmakers, fashion designers and musicians in many other kinds of music; and

    WHEREAS, we honor and recognize the outstanding work that all Hip Hop artists, educators, and enthusiasts present; and

    WHEREAS mayors across the United States and abroad are working together with artists to promote and celebrate local hip hop culture, prevent gang violence, and bring economic development to blighted and under invested neighborhoods,

    WHEREAS, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and Meek Mill, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Travis Scott, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Queen Latifah are just a few of the mayors across the country who are partnering with local hip hop artists to enhance cities, promote local investment, and inspire innovative solutions for challenges facing our nation's communities; and

    NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the United States Conference of Mayors encourages its members to continue to collaborate with local hip hop artists as a catalyst to revitalize neighborhoods, spur urban renewal, inspire local youth, attract tourists, and to enrich the cultural life in America's cities.
