Burning Man

Adopted at the 86th Annual Meeting in 2018

  • WHEREAS, Burning Man began in 1986 when Larry Harvey and his friends built and burned a wooden effigy on Baker Beach in San Francisco, California; and

    WHEREAS, in 1990 Burning Man moved to Northern Nevada's Black Rock Desert and established Black Rock City; and

    WHEREAS, Black Rock City is home to more than 75,000 people who come together each year from hundreds of cities across the country and around the world to connect, create, and collaborate; and

    WHEREAS, Burning Man is the Largest Leave No Trace event in the world, and

    WHEREAS, the Burning Man community embodies Ten Principles that reflect shared values including civic responsibility, inclusivity, gifting, and immediacy; and

    WHEREAS, people worldwide have been inspired by Burning Man and its principles to remake their hometowns into more vibrant, resilient, and inclusive communities; and

    WHEREAS, Burning Man has become a global cultural movement with 85 annual events and a network of thousands of people united in the pursuit of a more creative and connected existence; and

    WHEREAS, Burning Man Project is now a mission-driven nonprofit organization with programming in arts, education, and civic engagement; and

    WHEREAS, cities work with Burning Man Project to build community through the placement of large-scale, collaborative, and interactive public art; and

    WHEREAS, this summer Burning Man will host a delegation of mayors in Black Rock City, Nevada; and

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the US Conference of Mayors extends its appreciation to Burning Man Project for welcoming mayors to Black Rock City and recognizes Burning Man for sparking a kinder, more connected global citizenry with the potential to make great positive change; and

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the US Conference of Mayors encourages mayors to support artists, makers, and their local Burning Man communities in their shared effort to nurture creativity, innovation, inclusivity and civic pride.
