The IRA represents the single largest investment in climate and clean energy in U.S. history
Washington, D.C. — Today marks the first anniversary of the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act, a comprehensive law signed by President Biden that stands to deliver on numerous priorities of America’s mayors. In addition to its historic investments in the fight against climate change, the law — championed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) — will also help lower health care and energy costs, create good-paying jobs, and promote tax fairness. To mark the anniversary, USCM Vice President Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther, who will attend today’s celebration at the White House, released the following statement:
“Mayors have long been on the frontlines of the fight against climate change, leading the way for decades in efforts to curb emissions and invest in climate resilience while calling for strong federal action. Those calls were finally heard and answered with last year’s passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. This historic climate bill will help local leaders combat the effects of climate change and accelerate the nation’s transition to a clean energy future — a future that is built in America.
“Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe across the country — deadly wildfires in Hawaii, dangerous smoke in New York, deadly heat in Arizona — as a result of climate change. We thank President Biden and Congress for passing these critical climate investments for America’s cities. Mayors look forward to working with the Administration on the implementation of this historic law in the years ahead.”
