Washington, DC—Below is a statement by U.S. Conference of Mayors President Columbus (OH) Mayor Andrew Ginther on the shooting at a rally for former President Donald Trump earlier today.
“The nation’s mayors are relieved to hear that former President Trump is safe and did not sustain more serious injuries during today’s violent incident at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Our thoughts are with him, his family and all those impacted by this tragic event.
“Violence has no place in our political discourse. Such acts are an outright attack on our democracy. As citizens of this great country, we must uphold the values that define us as a nation without equivocation and treat one another with civility and respect no matter our differences.
“Today’s incident serves as another stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence in our country. It also underscores, once again, the urgent need for common sense gun safety legislation. We call on Congress to act now before more lives are lost.”
